Statement / Description of the gallery
Doppelzwei was launched in 2021 as a curatorial project without a specific location by an artist Soji Shimizu. This is a project that will continue to hold thematic exhibitions on an irregular basis. For our first exhibition in Berlin in September 2021, we invited three artists from Japan and the USA. For the second edition of the project, I am excited by the idea of using a 2×3.6m wall of the Armenia Art Fair as a canvas within which to structure a thematic group show.

We will curate an exhibition entitled “Gestures of Innocence“ with several artists, mostly from Japan, which is an allegory to the neoteny of society and its by-products nurtured by the history of rapid post-war economic growth. Here we see paintings of cars and stuffed animals, or drawings of crayon scribbles of the kind that many of us experienced as children. However, it is a “gesture” and we would like to suggest to the viewer the critical perspective and individual intentions behind it.
