Statement/ Description of the proposed show
Application for representation

Race, power, place and identities can be found in body of works by Zambian artist David Makala and Madam P. Makala’s His multi-disciplinary approach to production spans from paintings, printmaking, sculpture, performance and animation. Makala’s artwork navigates through the constraints restricting contemporary political discourse. Asking fundamental questions about one’s perception, identity and belonging. Makala and Madam P’S art weave through personal memories, traditions and notions of race.

Works by Turkish based Madam P present audiences with thought provoking imagery which she paints as a series on canvases. The pieces painted by Madam P are a reflection on her experience in human connection. She engages in research and one’s mental health and psychological state. Through her travel, Madam P’s approach creates a unique and stylized approach in recreating memories from her encounters with communities and various individuals.

Like Madam P, the mono prints by Makala play a particular and important role in creating a visual metaphor beyond spaces. The monoprints by Makala are a form of layering which to speak to the multiple identities constructed over a period of time. Both Makala and du ploy methodically layer time in an effort to visually record discussions around one’s identity and perception.
The interplay between materials fosters and encourages a conversations between object and perceptions. The prints resemble a self-portrait which attempts to reinstate the role of dialogue between mediums. Thereby posing fundamental questions that critic the Western influence in Africa to this very day.
