Jacques Vartabedian
Jacques Vartabedian (b.1987) is a Lebanese-Armenian artist, born in Beirut, Lebanon, where he currently works and lives. He holds a BA in Fine Arts and a Master’s degree in painting from the Lebanese lnstitute of Fine Arts.
His work is involved in the creation of conceptually based sociopolitical objects that deal with conditions of real experience, and with the multifaceted reality that challenges existing physical and political boundaries.
He combines contemporary ideas with traditional techniques and creates a blend of extensions of our reality that are based upon his strong cultural traditions and his interest in the changing world of today.
He was the recipient of the (Art on Board Beirut) painting prize by Saradar Foundation in 2015, and the Boghossian Foundation’s painting prize in 2016, followed up by an Art Residency at Villa Empain Brussels in 2018.
Jacques has participated in many solo and collective exhibitions locally and internationally.
Statement / Description of the gallery
About the Founder
Of French origins, Marie-Mathilde Jaber moved to Beirut in 2014 after completing a MA in art history / art market law at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. She first worked at the Metropolitan Art Society, a space hosting exhibitions in partnership with galleries, such as Kamel Mennour. She then worked for the Saradar Collection, while she was refining her interests by following a professional MA in Art Criticism and Curatorial Practices at St Joseph University, before choosing to step directly into the world of BEIRUT ART FAIR in 2017. This experience allowed her to discover the energy of the contemporary art scene on a regional scale and to establish strong relationships with its main actors.
Whereas the art fair had to relocate in Europe due to the economical collapse in Lebanon, Marie-Mathilde decided to stay and to create no/mad utopia, a digital gallery dedicated to promote emerging and mid-career artists living in the region.
About the Gallery
Launched in January 2022, no/mad utopia offers tailor-made support to artists living in the MENA region by developing their opportunities through exhibitions and art fairs.
Showcase of contemporary creation from North Africa and the Middle East, no/mad utopia is the platform of a generation that questions the meaning of history, the construction of identities, the social and political boundaries, or the unwritten norms within the society.
As an itinerant space for committed and poetic expression, no/mad utopia aims to reflect contemporary regional aspirations in dialogue with global issues, beyond borders.
